Man charged after reports of man with knife outside primary school

Police have charged a man after an incident outside a primary school.

Officers were called to Darlington Street in Tyldesley, Wigan, at around 3.10pm on Friday following reports of a man with a bladed weapon. Dramatic photos subsequently showed a man being pinned down outside St George's Central Primary School in Tyldesley.

Police, meanwhile, have praised members of the public who intervened.

Anthony Hughes, 46, has now been charged with possession of a bladed article and affray. He's due in court on Monday.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "Police in Wigan have had charges authorised after a man was reported to be carrying a bladed weapon near a primary school in the Tyldesley area on Friday afternoon.

"Anthony Hughes, 46, of Darlington Street, Tyldesley, has been charged with single counts of possession of a bladed article and affray, and has been remanded in custody ahead of an appearance before Wigan and Leigh magistrates' court on Monday, July 18.

"We thank the brave actions of the members of the public."
