Man arrested on suspicion of rape after woman attacked in alleyway

A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman was attacked in an alleyway in Oldham.

Police were called to a report of rape at the side of Royton Cricket Club at around 1.30am on October 31 last year. The woman had been on a night out with friends, when she walked into an alleyway and was raped by a man who made off from the scene afterwards, officers said.

Yesterday (May 19), the force issued an appeal for anyone to come forward with information about the attack or suspect. In an update this morning, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson confirmed that an arrest has been made.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape. He is now being questioned in police custody.

Det Con Kate Dawson, from GMP’s Oldham CID, said: "This was a horrific attack on a woman who had enjoyed a night out with friends before she was raped in an alleyway. This terrifying attack has left a woman understandably extremely shook up.

"No woman should ever have such a traumatic incident as this happen to them after a night out and we want to bring whoever was responsible to justice."
