Major road closed after police called to 'serious collision' in Newport - live updates

Police have closed a major road this evening following a "serious collision". In an initial statement from Gwent Police on social media on Tuesday, December 26, officers said: "Road closed: the A48 is currently closed between LG roundabout (by Blacksmiths Way) and the Marshfield Road junction.

"Diversions are in place which may cause congestion. Please avoid the area if possible and find alternative routes for your journey. Thank you."

South Wales Police added: "Road Closure: We are at the scene of a serious collision on the A48 between Blooms and Cleppa Park. The road is currently closed in both directions between the garden centre, Blooms, and the LG roundabout. It is expected to remain closed [for quite some time]. Motorists are advised to avoid the area."
