Major rail disruption as line closed while emergency services deal with incident

Train passengers have been warned of 'major disruption' tonight as a rail line is closed while emergency services deal with an incident.

National Rail say emergency services are responding to an incident between Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe / Macclesfield. As a result the line is currently closed and services may be cancelled or revised until they have reopened.

Rail passengers have been told disruption will continue until the end of the day and will affect a number of trains due in and out of Manchester.

Northern between Stoke-on-Trent and Manchester Piccadilly

CrossCountry have told customers looking to travel between Manchester and Birmingham that they should look to travel via Leeds or via Crewe / Shrewsbury.

Northern has said services between Stoke-on-Trent and Manchester Piccadilly will start and terminate at Macclesfield.

Two 16-seater mini buses departed Macclesfield at 7pm calling at all stations to Stoke-on-Trent, operated by S-Line.

A National Rail statement said: "The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe / Macclesfield, So they can safely carry out their work, all lines are currently closed.

"Services may be cancelled or revised until lines can be reopened. We anticipate major disruption will continue until the end of the day."
