Major fire at Leekes in Talbot Green saw 60 firefighters battle blaze
A major fire broke out at Leekes department store in Talbot Green in the early hours of Friday morning. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it happened at around 2.30am.
The A4222 Llantrisant Road southbound was closed from the A473 to B4264 Heol Miskin until around 8am. It has now reopened.
Five fire crews of 60 firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control. Pictures from the scene show a lot of smoke and huge flames.
South Wales Fire and Rescue have said they were able to limit the overall damage to the shop's main store. They said their control quickly mobilised crews from the nearby Pontyclun station to reports of a building fire.
A statement added: "Crews were faced with a well-developed fire in an outbuilding that adjoined the vast main store. The incident commander dynamically appraised the situation and requested an additional four fire engines, an aerial ladder platform, three water bowsers, an incident command unit and multiple officers.
"At the height of operations there were approximately 60 firefighters involved. At approximately 5am the fire was surrounded and brought under control."
Crew were supported by South Wales Police, National Grid, Wales & West Utilities, and the Salvation Army.
They added: "The rapid intervention and subsequent actions from our crews and partners, prevented the fire from spreading to the main store limiting the overall damage at the site."
The cause of the fire is now being investigated jointly by the fire service and South Wales Police.
