Major emergency response at River Irwell as two men rescued from water

Emergency services are at the scene of an ongoing incident beside the River Irwell this evening. Water units along with police and fire crews are in attendance on Cromwell Road in Salford.

A number of emergency services vehicles, including technical response units, fire engines and police cars remain stationed along the road. The activity is centred at the bridge over the River Irwell.

Pictures taken tonight show a sizeable response, with crews continuing to work at the scene. The nature of the incident has not yet been confirmed.

Greater Manchester Police and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been approached for further information.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said:

Just before 10pm this evening (Monday 27th May) firefighters were called to reports of people in need of rescue on Hugh Oldham Drive, Salford.

Two fire engines from Broughton and Salford fire stations, alongside the Water Incident Unit from Eccles and the Technical Response Unit from Ashton, arrived quickly at the scene, which involved two men by the River Irwell. Crews used specialist water rescue equipment to help extricate one man from the river bank who was then conveyed to the care of our colleagues at North West Ambulance Service.

GMFRS were in attendance for just over one hour."

We understand emergency services are now beginning to leave the scene.
