Maidstone United 0 Weymouth 0 match report: Stones held by relegated Terras in National League South stalemate

Maidstone are making hard work of finishing in the National League South play-offs after being held by relegated Weymouth.

The Stones huffed and puffed at the Gallagher Stadium but couldn’t find a way to break down opponents with nothing but pride to play for.

It leaves them still with plenty of work to do in the final three games to clinch a place in the top seven, needing to shake off Weston.

Stones boss George Elokobi returned to the dugout after missing last weekend’s defeat at Weston, while the only change in the starting XI saw Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong replace suspended midfielder Jordan Higgs.

The pressure was off Weymouth after the Dorset club’s relegation was confirmed last weekend and they could afford to turn up and express themselves.

There wasn’t much evidence of that, though, in a lacklustre first half from both sides at the Gallagher.

Skipper Tom Bearwish put a header wide after Calvin Brooks met a deep cross from Corey Jordan as the visitors threatened in the opening exchanges.

That was pretty much it from the Terras in the opening 45 but while Maidstone had all the play they didn’t do an awful lot with it, with Weymouth looking comfortable in defence.

Tayt Trusty worked keeper Will Buse from 20 yards after Sam Corne and Sol Wanjau-Smith combined.

A Wanjau-Smith cut-back, after running on to a lovely pass from Ben Brookes, just evaded Blair at the near post, while Berkeley-Agyepong fired wide after space opened up to shoot from the edge of the area.

Stones keeper Alexis Andre Jr had his opposite number worried after launching a huge drop-kick but the ball bounced over the crossbar.
