Maguire: There's a really good score out there

Leona Maguire is hopeful that a patient approach will pay dividends at today's second of the AIG Women's Open at Muirfield.

The Cavan woman began her round shortly before 8am this morning having carded what she described as a "steady" level par 71 to finish half a dozen shots behind Hinako Shibuno.

In testing conditions at the £6 million event in Scotland, Maguire showed real composure, though three bogeys – including two three putts – left food for thought.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport’s Greg Allen, the 27-year-old said that while she hasn’t played much links golf in the last few years, is enjoying the mental challenge it brings and believes she can make a move up the leaderboard today.

"I think it (first round) was a pretty steady round. I would have preferred not to have had those two three-putts, but I had a lot of good two putts as well, so overall, it was solid," she said.

"I didn’t let the ball get too controlled by the wind. I sort of plotted my way around, which is what I do best.

"There’s a really good score out there so I think it’s just a matter of staying patient to make the most of the opportunities when they do come up."
