M62 LIVE updates as motorway hit with TWO crashes and huge queues

Drivers heading to and from Greater Manchester are facing long delays on part of the M62 following two crashes.

Two lanes of traffic were closed on the M62 eastbound between junctions 11 at Birchwood and 12 for the M60 Eccles Interchange. One lane has since reopened.

National Highways says it follows a 'multi vehicle collision' this morning (June 19). The incident is understood to have taken place at around 7am.

Drivers are still facing delays of more than 45 minutes, with queues tailing back for around five miles. Congestion has tailed back onto the M6 southbound, from junction 22 at Newton-le-Willows.

It is affecting drivers heading from Warrington and Merseyside towards Greater Manchester ahead of rush hour. There are delays on the A57 in Irlam and A580 East Lancs Road as drivers avoid the motorway.

National Highways says drivers are facing delays of 45 minutes approaching junction 12 of the M62.

Meanwhile, drivers on the opposite side of the M62 are also facing delays following a second crash involving 'multiple vehicles'.

Two lanes of traffic are currently closed in the area of junction 12, with emergency services working at the scene.

A National Highways North West spokesperson said: "Following a multiple vehicle collision. Lanes two and three (of three) are closed on the M62 westbound within J12 near the M60 link.

"Emergency services and Traffic Officers are working at the scene with recovery arranged and en route.

"There are delays of up to 30 minutes on the approach."
