M62: All traffic STOPPED with long traffic delays and drivers pictured on motorway

All traffic was stopped on the M62 this afternoon with emergency services in attendance at the scene.

Motorists were being temporarily held in stationary traffic due to the incident on the M62 Westbound at J23 for the A640 near Huddersfield just before 3pm.

Traffic was stopped shortly before 3pm this afternoon. Motorway traffic cameras showed congestion building in the area.

Images taken by motorists this afternoon showed drivers caught in the significant delays standing on the carriageway amid the closure.

As of 3.45pm, the crash was moved onto the hard shoulder with lanes reopen.

"Long delays due to accident, now on the hard shoulder on M62 Westbound at J23," the update read.

"All lanes have reopened after traffic was held for around 25 minutes at 14:50."

Delays had cleared by 4.30pm.

Drivers were flouting the law by getting out of their cars and using the hard shoulder after a crash on the M62 on Monday (August 25).

An 'annoyed' passenger shared pictures of the law breaking drivers skirting around the gridlocked traffic. Large queues formed with long delays after a crash at around 2pm.

There are two lanes closed currently on the M6 at Thelwall Viaduct. The incident was reported northbound between J20 M56 J9 (Lymm Interchange) and J21 A57 Manchester Road (Woolston). It is closed due to a crash.

There is also a lane closure on the M6. There is a broken down vehicle on the southbound carriageway between J23 A580 East Lancashire Road (Haydock) and J22 A49 Winwick Link Road (Newton Le Willows).
