M6 traffic live: Multiple lanes closed after five-lorry smash with major disruption expected

Queues of traffic are forming on the M6 Northbound this morning after an "accident" involving five lorries caused three lanes of the motorway to be closed.

Motorists travelling on the stretch of the M6 near Knutsford saw their morning journey grind to a halt after the incident, which was first reported around 4.30am.

Road traffic sensors read: "Three lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident, five lorries involved on M6 Northbound from J18 A54 Middlewich Road (Middlewich / Holmes Chapel) to J19 A556 (Knutsford)."

This is a live incident, updates will follow below

The three-lane closure that is causing early morning traffic to build on the stretch of the M6 near Knutsford is affecting traffic between Junction 18 and 19, between Sproston Green and Tabley Hill in Cheshire.

With three lanes closed and early commuter traffic beginning to build, National Highways are advising Northbound traffic that they could be queuing for a while.

National Highway said on X: "3 lanes (of 4) lanes remain closed on the M6 north between J18 Sproston Green and J19 Tabley hill in Cheshire.

"All emergency services are on scene for a serious collision. National Highways traffic officers are assisting with traffic management. Expect delays to increase."

They also said: "Delays and congestion for this incident will increase quickly so plan your journey around this if you can."

Nobody appears to be trapped in the five-vehicle collision, which has closed the first three lanes of the Northbound carriageway.

Posting on X, the fire service said: "Emergency services are at the scene of a road traffic collision involving five heavy goods vehicles on lanes 1-3 of the Northbound carriageway of the M6 between J18 and J19.

"Nobody is trapped
