M6 reopens after 'serious' Christmas Day crash in Cumbria

The M6 motorway was closed following a crash in Cumbria on Christmas Night (December 25). Both the northbound and southbound carriageways were shut between Junction 41 and Junction 42.

The closures were first reported at around 11.35pm, with National Highways describing the crash as 'serious'. The motorway had reopened to traffic by shortly before 1am on Boxing Day and earlier diversions were removed.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The M6 is now open in both directions between J41 Hutton-in-the-Forest and J42 Carleton following an earlier serious collision. Delays clearing well in the area. Have a safe journey and thanks for your patience."

The M6 in Cumbria is closed in both directions between J42 (Carleton) and J41 (Hutton-in-the-Forest) due to a serious collision.

Emergency services including Cumbria Police are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene to assist with traffic management.

Collision investigations are taking place and the road is expected to remain closed for several hours."
