Lucy Letby retrial: Consultant tells jury he felt 'very uncomfortable' amid baby collapses linked to nurse

A consultant alleged to have caught nurse Lucy Letby 'red-handed' attacking a severely premature baby told a jury he felt 'very uncomfortable' following a series of baby collapses associated with the nurse. Dr Ravi Jayaram said it prompted him to check on the nurse and he found another infant collapsing in her care.

Convicted multiple murderer Letby is accused of displacing the breathing tube of a tiny baby girl two hours after she was born. She denies attempted murder.

Letby, 34, is alleged to have attempted to murder the infant, referred to in press reports of the proceedings as 'Child K', at the neo-natal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital in February 2016 within two hours of her birth. Jurors at Manchester Crown Court have previously been told that following a long trial that ended last year, the defendant was convicted of the murders of seven babies and the attempted murders of six more.

By the time she allegedly targeted Child K, the then nurse had already murdered five children and attempted to murder three others on various dates between June 2015 and October 2015, the court has heard. She was also convicted last year of the attempted murders of twin boys in April 2016; an attempt to murder another boy in June 2016; and the murders of two triplet boys later that month.
