‘Lucky to stay on the pitch’ – Rio Ferdinand slams Man Utd star Harry Maguire in Burnley draw

Rio Ferdinand hit out at Harry Maguire’s poor performance against Burnley and insisted he was ‘lucky to stay on the pitch’ after one clumsy challenge.

Manchester United slipped out of the top four following a 1-1 draw with Burnley at Turf Moore on Tuesday night with a disappointing second half performance costing them.

The Red Devils dominated the first half and took the lead through Paul Pogba but Maguire was at fault for Burnley’s equaliser as Jay Rodriguez found the back of the net.

Rodriguez again caused the England international problems later on and was clumsily brought down by the defender on the halfway line with Maguire lucky to receive only a yellow card.

Ferdinand was disappointed with Maguire’s performance and insists his displays are a long way off what fans expect.

‘The goal was poor on Harry’s part. I’m sure behind closed doors he will take responsibility but he doesn’t need to come out here and go crazy about it, they need to iron it out,’ he said on BT Sport.

‘I think the challenge he made just over the half way line, he’s lucky to stay on the pitch. I feel the striker is running in on goal there.

‘It’s a performance I’m sure he’ll want to erase and get into the next game as quick as possible but these things happen.

‘This season you’ve definitely seen that, whether that’s a hangover from the Euros physically and mentally I’m not sure.

‘There hasn’t been the consistency you expect from a player of his stature.’
