Kieran Trippier explains why Manchester United star Harry Maguire is a 'fantastic' captain

Kieran Trippier says Manchester United are lucky to have under-pressure Harry Maguire as their captain.

It has been a challenging season for the £80million centre-back, as his form and leadership credentials have been subject to heavy scrutiny from pundits and some United supporters.

However, the Old Trafford giants continue to stand by their skipper and Maguire, yet again, donned their armband at the fearsome Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday night.

Maguire partnered Raphael Varane for that one, while Victor Lindelof was a surprise inclusion at right-back.

Despite question marks over his marking for the Atletico Madrid opener - with Joao Felix pouncing seven minutes into the game - Maguire and United held firm from that stage on as Anthony Elanga went on to net a late equaliser in the Champions League last-16 first leg.

United, meanwhile, wanted Trippier last summer but, having eventually decided to leave Atletico in January, it was Newcastle who signed him for £12million. He remains England teammates with Maguire.

Speaking during BBC 5 Live Sport's coverage, former Atletico man Trippier said: "Harry is a fantastic captain and a brilliant mate of mine.

"He's a fantastic player and he's shown that over a number of years for club and country.
