An opening round 66 on the North Course had the 36 year-old well placed for tilt at the tournament, but the Offaly native has found the South Course more unforgiving.
His renowned short game saw him scramble to a second round 73, and was unable to better that score on moving day to sit on four-under par, seven shots off the clubhouse lead with number of players yet to complete their third rounds.
Starting at the 10th hole, Lowry was level par through his opening nine holes before hitting a sticky patch at the fourth (his 14th) finding the rough twice on his way to a bogey. He followed that up with another at the par-four fifth.
While a birdie at the next halted that slide, Lowry closed out requiring three putts at the ninth, his last, for a round of one-over par.
Waterford native Seamus Power missed the cut in California.
