Louis van Gaal urges Erik ten Hag to reject Manchester United manager offer

Louis van Gaal believes Erik ten Hag should turn down the chance to manage Manchester United if he is offered the job this year. The 52-year-old was interviewed for the role last week and is currently seen as the prime candidate for the position.

United are not expecting anything 'imminent' concerning their managerial situation, with Ten Hag currently edging ahead of Mauricio Pochettino in their search for a new permanent boss.

Ajax have refused to comment on Ten Hag's future, and the Dutchman is out of contract in 2023. Pochettino is expected to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season and remains under consideration by United, with Spain coach Luis Enrique and Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui regarded as outsiders.

Van Gaal, who managed United for two years, still believes Ten Hag would be a good capture for United, but he has warned his Dutch compatriot about the 'commercial' set-up of the club.

As quoted by Voetbal International, Van Gaal said: “Erik ten Hag is a great coach, and that is always good for Manchester United. But Manchester United are a commercial club, so it’s a difficult choice for a coach. He’d better go to a football club.

“I’m not going to advise him, he’ll call me himself. But he must choose a football club and not a commercial club.”
