Lost the ball 35 times, 0 key passes, 22 duels lost: Rangers' three worst players vs Red Star

Glasgow Rangers went through into the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Europa League, despite losing 2-1 away from home on Thursday evening.

Ryan Kent grabbed the goal for the visitors to ease any fears after winning the first leg at Ibrox 3-0, but it was not always plain sailing for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side in Serbia.

The Transfer Tavern have used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the Gers’ three worst performers (to have played at least 45 minutes) were on the night against Red Star Belgrade:

With a 6.5 overall rating given, Balogun was ranked as Rangers’ third-worst player.

The centre-back lost out on three of his duels, failed to record any interceptions or key passes and gave possession away seven times.

He also had the fewest touches (32) out of any Light Blues player to have started the match, suggesting that he was not always comfortable on the ball.

Aribo was ranked as the Gers’ second-worst performer with a 6.1 rating.

The winger was taken off for Scott Arfield after 68 minutes after losing a player-high 15 duels, while he also has no shots on goal and made no successful dribbles, interceptions, key passes, crosses or accurate long balls, losing possession 15 times.

Bassey was given a 6.0 rating, duly ranking as the Gers’ worst player in Belgrade.

The left-back was unsuccessful in four of his duels and never managed a successful dribble, clearance, key pass, accurate cross or long ball, giving away possession 13 times in total.

Described as a player who was ‘wearing wellies‘ by Rangers podcasters Heart & Hand, this was simply not Bassey’s night.

In other news, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has now set his sights on this ‘excellent’ attacker
