Local elections 2022 LIVE: Results and reaction from Greater Manchester and UK

Millions of people have taken to the polls across the UK to cast their votes in this year's local elections. In Greater Manchester, councillor seats are up for grabs in every borough, including Rochdale and Bury, which are both electing an entire council.

Across the rest of England, votes will be cast in 146 councils areas, including every borough of London and major cities such as Sheffield, Leeds and Birmingham. All 32 councils in Scotland and all 22 in Wales are also holding elections today.

Polling stations close at 10pm and counts will be taking place overnight many areas, with the first results expected shortly after midnight. Bolton could be one of the UK's first councils to declare its winners, shortly followed by Tameside, Wigan and Oldham.

In other boroughs, counts will not be starting until Friday morning, meaning there will be a longer wait for the results to come through. Bury Council, which has all of its 51 seats up for grabs this year, is not expected to declare its results until Friday evening.

Over in Stockport, traditionally Greater Manchester's most tightly-contested borough, the council is currently run by Labour. That's despite the Liberal Democrats emerging as the largest group at last year's local elections.

In other parts of the country, Hartlepool in the north east will be one to watch after the Conservatives won the parliamentary seat from Labour at a by-election this time last year. In London, Wandsworth could swing to Labour after 44 years of being in the hands of the Tories.
