Lloyds scrap mobile bank branches in shift towards online banking

Lloyds Banking Group has announced it will close down its mobile banking service this year.

It comes after it revealed plans to remove 1,600 jobs across its branch network as it moves ahead in the shift towards online banking. Lloyds ran the mobile branches as an alternative to high street branches where vans would visit town and cities across the country.

Customers are able to visit mobile branches at set days and times to cash in cheques, withdraw cash, pay bills, send money abroad, and general account inquiries. However, Lloyds announced it would end the service in May as not enough customers are using them.

A spokeswoman said: “Customers have used our mobile branches much less over time and some locations now have as little as two customers using the service. We’ll be introducing more community bankers, alongside the other options customers already have for their banking, including the Post Office, online, our mobile apps, phone banking, video services and web chat.”

Lloyds published details of its decision to close the service for each location, including a breakdown of how many customers regularly visited certain routes over the past six months. Some branches were only serving a single-digit figure.

On average, each mobile branch helped 14 customers, with visits dropping by 90 per cent since 2018. It said it will send out 32 more community bankers to provide face-to-face banking support in areas where a mobile branch is stopping, alongside its existing network.
