Liverpool to face Madrid in Champions League last 16
Liverpool have been drawn to play Real Madrid in the last-16 of the Champions League, the repeat of last May's final emerging as the pick of the ties from this morning's draw in Nyon.
Jurgen Klopp's side paid the price for qualifying as runners-up behind Group A's pace-setters Napoli with a tough draw against the reigning champions.
Real surprised Liverpool in last season's final in Paris, Vinícius Júnior scoring the only goal as the La Liga giants claimed European football's grandest prize for the 14th time.
The draw threw up another recent final pairing, with Bayern Munich, boasting a 100% record in the group phase, being drawn to face PSG, who were pipped by Benfica at the top of Group H. The match-up is a repeat of the August 2020 final, when the German side won 1-0 in a behind closed doors game.
Premier League champions and 2021 Champions League finalists Manchester City have been drawn to face German side RB Leipzig - fourth in last season's Bundesliga - in the last 16. Tottenham, who sealed top spot in their group with a last-gasp winner from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg away at Marseille, have been drawn to face Italian champions AC Milan with the first leg at San Siro. Chelsea, winners of the competition in 2012 and 2021, will be up against Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16.
Elsewhere, Inter have drawn with Porto, Eintract Frankfurt face Serie A's form side Napoli, while Belgian side Club Brugge will play Benfica.
