Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai scathing verdict delivered by Hungary boss as Scotland's Euro 2024 foes stumble

Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai was described as "mediocre" by Hungary boss Marco Rossi as Scotland's Euro 2024 rivals lost their 14-match unbeaten run after going down to the Republic of Ireland in Dublin.

Steve Clarke's men face the Magyars in the final match of the Euros in Stuttgart, having already played Germany and Switzerland. Rossi had previously stated he deliberately chose to face Ireland in a friendly because of their similarities in style to Scotland. But he was far from happy at their proud record being ripped away from them by a last gasp Irish winner. And he wasn't impressed with Anfield midfielder Szoboszlai either.

He said: "Szoboszlai had a mediocre night, but that's football. Sometimes it goes better, sometimes less. Roland Sallai had a better day than him, but basically, there was no problem with the team's attitude. We should never have lost and we wouldn't even have been satisfied with a draw. Ireland had two chances and took them both. They were nothing special although I must congratulate them.

“We didn't do what we had to do, for the future we must learn from our mistakes. When you are in the 91st minute, you cannot concede a goal like that. If it's not possible to win then you take a draw but we were on the backfoot and conceded. I am not happy with the result, despite the fact that we were coming off 14 matches without a defeat. But we are not Germany or England, we are in a process and we are on the right track.

"I can't criticise my players, but the result is the most important thing in football - we would get completely different comments if we won this match. We have to accept what happened, we have to work hard, we have to highlight the positives, like the attitude of the players."
