Liverpool's latest award shows Pep Guardiola's 2018 frustration still exists after jibe

Pep Guardiola's dig at Liverpool following Mo Salah's FWA Footballer of the Year award is nothing new.

The Catalan joked that the Reds always claim the game's individual accolades after the Egyptian's efforts were recognised. He secured the award for a second time, having also done so in 2018. He's scored 22 times in the Premier League this term for a team seeking the quadruple.

In recent years Salah has also claimed the PFA Player of the Year award whilst Virgil van Dijk won it the following year as the Reds missed out on the Premier League title by a point as Manchester City retained their title. On this occasion Salah beat Kevin De Bruyne to the individual gong.

In response Guardiola joked: "Jurgen said it, they have the best keeper, the best second keeper in the world, the best central defender, the best holding midfielder, the best striker... so it's normal they win all the awards."

De Bruyne was also pipped to the PFA Player of the Year award by Salah in 2018 despite playing a leading role in City's centurions season - a feat yet to be repeated. The Belgian was the standout performer for the champions on that occasion but was overlooked as Salah's 44 goals ensured he scooped the award, in what was a record setting year for the Reds forward.

Following that snub four years ago Guardiola said: “You know my opinion about these awards," he said, suggesting he might duck the question. But he pressed ahead: "If he doesn’t win, congratulations to the guy who is going to win, but from my point of view when you are analysing [the last] nine or 10 months, there was no player better than him, in terms of the continuity, in terms of being there every three days of all competitions.
