Liverpool record-breaker reacts to joining new club after 16 years with the Reds

Ben Woodburn has thanked Liverpool for 16 years at the club, during which time he became their youngest ever goalscorer, as he joins Championship side Preston North End.

The 22-year-old’s contract at Anfield came to an end this summer and Preston have brought him in on a one-year deal with an option for a further 12 months.

The Wales international made history in 2016 when he scored in a League Cup game against Leeds United at just 17 years and 45 days, breaking Michael Owen’s record as the Reds’ youngest ever scorer.

Much was expected of him at Liverpool but he never scored for the club again, with that strike against Leeds proving to be his only goal.

After a lengthy spell with the Reds from a young boy, Woodburn is moving on, but has thanked Liverpool for his time at Anfield.

’16 years at this amazing club! Thankyou for everything @liverpoolfc,’ Woodburn wrote on Instagram.

Trent Alexander-Arnold replied to the post: ‘My brother what a journey.’

The midfielder was not immediately snapped up by a new club after being released by Liverpool, training with Preston for a week before manager Ryan Lowe decided to bring him in permanently.

‘I’m very excited for the deal to be done,’ said Woodburn. ‘Obviously I’ve been on trial for a week now and things have gone pretty well, so I’m buzzing to get started as a Preston player.

‘Obviously when I got called and told I could come and train, I was buzzing. I wanted to show the gaffer what I could do, luckily I’ve earned a contract out of it.

‘He’s tried to get me at his older clubs a few times and unfortunately things haven’t worked out there, but now we can work together and I’m a fan of how he plays football, so I’m really excited to get going.’
