Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp shares upbeat title race verdict before Man City vs Newcastle

Jurgen Klopp admitted Liverpool fell short in their target against Tottenham on Saturday afternoon, but the German is not ready to give up hope on the title race. After Liverpool's 1-1 draw, Manchester City will move three points clear at the Premier League summit with victory over Newcastle on Sunday afternoon (4.30pm kick off).

At that stage each side will have three games remaining and they have a comparable goal difference. Liverpool were held at Anfield by top-four contenders Tottenham - and they had to do it the hard way, with Luis Diaz netting a 76th minute leveller after Son Heung-min opened the scoring.

Pep Guardiola and star-studded City take centre stage later today (Sunday) but, while Klopp admits there is added work to do, he says it is not absolutely imperative for City to lose today to keep the Premier League title race alive.

During his post-match interview, Klopp told BT Sport: "Come on. It was always clear something like this would happen. It's not that all games are played and we need a defeat [on Sunday] for City against Newcastle, there are other games to play.

"We have to keep going, that was always clear. I wish for the effort the boys put in, if we won this game, with all praise for Tottenham, you play a world-class team where they sit back, they won against City I think."

Klopp added: "So game-plan works for this game, that's how it is. It's really a tough one and they gave everything, time wasting, these kind of things, it makes it not easy, [it is] smart, but not easy for us. We have a point more than before the game. That's the positive thing. We wanted three, that's not so cool."
