Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp says three clubs can do ‘what they want’ before Man City clash

Jurgen Klopp believes it’s impossible for Liverpool to compete with Premier League rivals Manchester City and Newcastle United.

Klopp’s side face Man City on Sunday afternoon at Anfield but it’s the visitors who go into the game as the red-hot favourites.

Eleventh-placed Liverpool currently trail unbeaten City by 13 points and will need to be at their best to avoid slumping to a third league defeat this campaign.

Asked how Liverpool can keep up the pace with City, Klopp said “it’s not possible” because Pep Guardiola’s team are one of three clubs in world football operating without any economic restraints.

City have enjoyed huge success since the Abu Dhabi United Group completed their takeover in 2008.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are at the start of a similar journey after becoming the world’s richest football club in 2021 thanks to the Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) takeover.

And over in France, Paris Saint-Germain have assembled one of the most formidable line-ups in world football - boasting the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe - since being taken over by Qatar-based Qatari Sports Investment.

Klopp believes that, unlike the aforementioned super-rich trio, Liverpool have a ceiling.

"You will not like the answer, and you all have the answer already," Klopp told reporters. "Nobody can compete with City. You have the best team in the world, and you put in the best striker on the market.

"No matter what it costs, they just do it. I know City will not like it, nobody will like it. Liverpool can not act like them. It's not possible.

"It's just clear. There are three clubs in world football that can do what they want, financially. It's legal and everything, fine. But it's a fact.
