Liverpool identify potential Roberto Firmino replacement in transfer market

Liverpool hold an interest in Rennes forward Martin Terrier and could sign the Frenchman to replace Roberto Firmino, according to reports in France.

The Reds have revamped their frontline significantly in recent months, bringing in Colombian winger Luis Diaz from Porto in January and adding former Benfica striker Darwin Nunez to their arsenal this summer.

Mohamed Salah has also finally renewed his contract with the club and is set to remain at Anfield until 2025, but Sadio Mane has departed after six years at Anfield in order to join Bayern Munich. That means the Salah, Mane and Roberto Firmino trifecta which powered the Reds to both the UEFA Champions League and Premier League is no more, and Firmino’s own future remains uncertain.

The Brazil international has just a year left to run on his current deal, having first signed for the Reds from TSG Hoffenheim in 2015 under previous manager Brendan Rodgers.

Approaching the age of 31, Firmino has yet to enter discussions with the club about a potential renewal and the expectation is he will be allowed to leave on a free transfer in the summer of 2023.

With that in mind, French outlet l’Équipe reports that the Reds admire Stade Rennais forward Terrier, and could make a move for the Frenchman if and when Firmino moves on.

The 25-year-old came through the youth academy at Lille in the north of the country, before moving south in order to join Lyon in 2018. After two seasons with the club has was transferred again, this time to Rennes, where his form has been especially impressive ever since.
