Liverpool hand Wolves a boost in European fight with Man Utd, West Ham, Arsenal and Tottenham

Liverpool's Carabao Cup victory could be good news for Wolverhampton Wanderers in their quest to secure European football.

Wolves endured a difficult week with defeats to European rivals Arsenal and West Ham, coupled with a win for Tottenham Hotspur, leaving Bruno Lage's team in eighth place.

A top four finish now looks a step too far for Wolves, but catching fifth-placed West Ham isn't beyond the realms of possibility. Wolves have a game-in-hand on West Ham and sit just five points beneath them in the Premier League table.

Because title-chasing Liverpool won the Carabao Cup on Sunday, fifth and sixth spots in the Premier League still guarantee Europa League football, while seventh would secure a place in the Europa Conference League.

Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea are all still involved in the FA Cup so, should any of the aforementioned trio win it, the team which finishes seventh will qualify for the Europa Conference League.

However, if a team outside the top five wins the FA Cup, only the top six positions in the league will guarantee European football next season.

Leicester City, who are still involved in the Europa Conference League, could also throw a spanner in the works.

With the Foxes into the round of 16 of the Europa Conference League, the rule as per UEFA, if they are the inaugural winners of the competition, states: "The winner will gain a place in the following season's UEFA Europa League group stage if they have not qualified for the UEFA Champions League via their domestic competition."

As Brendan Rodgers' side are unlikely to seal a top-four finish this season, they pose a threat to Wolves, Arsenal, Manchester United, West Ham and Spurs for a place in next season's Europa League.
