Liverpool gain Women’s Super League promotion in return to top tier
Liverpool have earned promotion to the Women’s Super League, returning to the top tier of English women’s football after a two season absence.
The Reds defeated Bristol City 4-2 to confirm their promotion with two matches left to go.
Niamh Fahey, Jasmine Matthews, Katie Stengel and Missy Bo Kearns all were on the scoresheet, cancelling out goals from Aggie Beever-Jones and Abi Harrison.
Stengel’s goal was the pick of the bunch due to the build-up. Liverpool were awarded a throw-in some way from the penalty box, but defender Megan Campbell was able to hurl the ball towards the Liverpool attackers.
The ball was headed on to Stengel, who was able to tap it into the back of Bristol’s net.
A Championship-record crowd of 5,752 were at Ashton Gate to watch the match, which left Liverpool top of the table with 49 points, 14 points clear of second-place Bristol.
Following the victory, Matt Beard became the first manager to win both the WSL and the Championship.
