Liverpool FC star says he was 'right' to snub Manchester United after Jurgen Klopp's advice

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate insists signing for Liverpool amid reported interest from Manchester United was the right decision.

The France international moved to the Premier League before the start of last season after Liverpool triggered a £36m release clause in the RB Leipzig player's contract. That summer, United, plus top-flight rivals Chelsea and even Real Madrid, were reportedly interested in the centre-back.

The Mirror reports that Konate chose Merseyside after being persuaded by Jurgen Klopp's answer to a question about how he would advise his own son in such a situation as the Frenchman found himself in. Instead, United signed Raphael Varane during that transfer window and have since added Lisandro Martinez to a new-look defence under the management of Erik ten Hag.

Almost two years after moving to Anfield, Konate does not regret the decision. “My answer to the question about whether I made the right decision is to look at that first season. I came into a team that was within a whisker of winning four trophies.

“We only won two (the Carabao Cup and FA Cup) in the end - but we were only a point away from winning the league and, so, so close to the Champions League. My fame has grown so much as a result of being a Liverpool player. It has been fantastic to experience.

“And even after the season we’ve had so far, what I went through in my first year is enough for me to say: ‘yes, I absolutely made the right decision’.”
