Liverpool fans’ chant sends message to Manchester City after Villarreal win

Liverpool fans are jubilant after they watched their side recover from a first-half second leg slump to claim a 5-2 aggregate victory over Villarreal on Tuesday and book their place in this year’s Champions League final.

They will find out their opponents on Wednesday when Manchester City travel to Real Madrid after a 4-3 first-leg win. Liverpool beat their title challengers in their last meeting, triumphing 3-2 winners in the FA Cup semi-finals.

They could face them again this month should Pep Guardiola mastermind a win over Madrid. It would be their first meeting in a major final since the 2016 League Cup, in which City ran out the winners after a penalty shoot-out.

Liverpool fans seem to be very aware of the fact that they could meet the Manchester club in a showdown again, but this time for the Champions League trophy. After sealing their win over Villarreal on Tuesday, Reds supporters who travelled to the Estadio de la Ceramica were heard chanting a message to City.

As per The Athletic’s James Pearce, they sang ‘Are you watching Manchester?’ while Virgil Van Dijk was conducting media interviews. City made the final last year, losing out to English opponents Chelsea 1-0.

If they progress past Madrid on Wednesday, it would mean the Champions League final will have been contested between two Premier League clubs for three of the past four seasons. Liverpool beat Tottenham in the 2019 final following their loss to Real Madrid the year prior.
