Liverpool fans BOO Champions League anthem as supporters join Steven Gerrard in rage at UEFA failing

Liverpool fans have hit out at UEFA prior to their clash with Real Madrid at Anfield.

A UEFA-commissioned review into the treatment of Reds fans outside the 2022 Champions League final discovered failings which 'almost led to a disaster' after faults by European football’s hierarchy and the lack of a venue risk assessment by French authorities. Police in France have also faced criticism in the independent report for firing tear gas and pepper spray indiscriminately near turnstiles being used by Liverpool fans, leading to crushing around security barriers at PSG's Stade de France.

Jurgen Klopp's side face Real Madrid in the competition's last 16 in their first meeting since the controversial match, with BT Sport also apologising for their coverage of the Spring clash, having no correspondents outside the stadium to report on the developing issues. Now fans in the stands have made their voices heard on another big night.

The entire tournament's anthem was booed in response to the report's damning findings. There were then chants of 'f*** UEFA' as supporters in red showed their rage.

Kop icon and former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has urged accountability, saying on BT: “I think that news was very welcome in this stadium and amongst every Liverpool fan because it’s not good enough.

“I think the treatment on the night was a disgrace. I think it’s the only time as a pundit I’ve never really enjoyed it - we didn’t have no signal inside the ground, no internet connection.

"You have family and friends that are outside the stadium and the treatment was a disgrace basically. Thankfully the independent investigations have come clear and there’s no blame for Liverpool fans which is important.”
