Liverpool could replace Mohamed Salah with forward who walked out on Arsenal

If you had to replace Mohamed Salah, how on earth would you go about it? The Egyptian is easily one of the world’s top three players, even if the voters for the Ballon d’Or haven’t yet woken up to this reality.

Liverpool and their supporters will be hoping the club is not looking for a new right forward any time soon. Jurgen Klopp declared he is happy with how contract talks are progressing when speaking ahead of his side’s Champions League match with Benfica.

But until a deal is agreed, the possibility will remain that the Reds’ number 11 leaves Anfield at some point in the next 14 months. Liverpool need to be prepared for the post-Salah world in case it starts sooner than they would like.

If a report from Goal is to be believed, Serge Gnabry could be the man to take over on the right side of the Reds' frontline. As with Salah, the Bayern Munich man is out of contract in 2023 and has yet to agree an extension. It has been claimed that Liverpool have identified him as a potential replacement, though they will face competition from Real Madrid and Juventus.

So far, so standard transfer rumour. But as we know that the Reds target players on relatively short contracts, who will fit in around their existing players, the Gnabry story certainly makes a lot of sense.

If you look at a list of the 10 players to whom Salah is most statistically similar (on FBRef) then there aren’t many realistic transfer targets for Liverpool. Four of them play in the Premier League – and three for Manchester City – while Lionel Messi and Neymar are equally unobtainable for financial reasons if no other.
