Liverpool Airport aim cheeky dig at Man City after flight is forced to divert

Liverpool John Lennon Airport have aimed a cheeky dig at Manchester City after the Premier League champions' plane was forced to divert due to Storm Dudley.

Pep Guardiola's men were returning from Lisbon after thrashing Sporting CP 5-0 thanks to goals from Riyad Mahrez, a Bernardo Silva brace, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling.

The City squad had been due to fly into Manchester before being forced to divert, with the club releasing a short statement once the plane had landed safely.

"We can confirm the plane transporting the first team home from Lisbon has landed safely in Liverpool after high winds forced a diversion from Manchester," the statement read.

Wind speeds across the city have caused chaos for those commuting to and from work this evening, with The Met Office currently issuing a yellow weather warning for the region.

Once the Merseyside airport had welcomed the City squad, they took to Twitter to aim a dig at Liverpool's Premier League rivals.

Accompanied with a picture of the aircraft, they tweeted: "Great to safely welcome Manchester City to the football capital of England this afternoon after their flight was diverted from their home airport due to high winds."

One City fan had the perfect reply to the airport, writing: "I bet you are not used to seeing the champions of England there."

Manchester City return to action on Saturday when they host Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
