LIVE: Woman's body found near canal as aqueduct 'taped off'
The body of a woman has been found by a canal in Greater Manchester. The woman's identity is not known but the incident at Marple Aqueduct in Stockport is not being treated as suspicious at this time, the Manchester Evening News understands.
Emergency services are dealing with the incident this afternoon (August 22). The M.E.N. understands the woman's body was found on the grass by the canal and officers are now trying to establish her identity and the circumstances leading to her death.
The canal towpath at Marple Aqueduct in Stockport has been taped off by police, according to an eyewitness.
Fire and rescue crews are at the scene, the eyewitness said. Members of the public have been asked to avoid the area.

In a post on Facebook, Romiley & Marple community first responders wrote: "Please avoid the Aqueduct in Marple whilst we deal with an incident."
The aqueduct, located between Marple and Romiley, carries the lower level of the Peak Forest Canal over the River Goyt.
Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for comment.
