LIVE: Woman rushed to hospital after crash outside The Manchester College with man arrested - updates

A road is closed with heavy traffic building due to an ongoing police incident outside The Manchester College. Ashton Old Road (A635) in Openshaw is completely blocked off with emergency services at the scene this afternoon.

Bus services are being diverted due to the police incident, with the main road closed between Nuttall Street and Odell Street in both directions.

Police are on the scene of the ongoing incident, which was first reported outside the Manchester College Openshaw Campus shortly after 1.30pm.

Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted: "Road closed. Ashton Old Road is closed between Nuttall Street and Odell Street in both directions. This is due to a police incident. Please seek an alternative route."

Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service have been approached for further details on the incident.

The North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) has confirmed that an air ambulance was called out to the scene earlier today, along with a road ambulance, an advanced paramedic and incident response unit.

The patient, approximately aged in her 20s, was taken to hospital with a serious head injury by road.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed to us that a man, aged in his 50s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving.

He remains in custody currently.

Police remain on the scene after the woman was struck at around 12.40pm today.
