LIVE updates: Residents urged to keep windows and doors closed as large fire breaks out in Bury with smoke seen for miles

Smoke can be seen for miles tonight after a large fire broke out in Bury. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) say they are currently tackling a blaze at a 'commercial unit' on Mount Son Road in Radcliffe.

Six fire engines are currently at the scene.

Video shows thick black smoke billowing into the air close to the town centre. Others have reported being able to see the smoke from the M60 and as far away as MediaCity in Salford.

"Residents nearby are advised to keep their doors and windows closed" GMFRS said. "Please avoid the area where possible."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has said in the last few minutes: “Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three jets and a ground monitor to extinguish the fire, they are now carrying out dampening down operations.

“Firefighters have been in attendance for around three and a half hours and are still at the scene. An investigation into the cause of the fire will be conducted. ”

Bury Council have just posted on social media to say that firefighters have now extinguished the blaze but that the road will remain closed overnight whilst work to investigate the cause is carried out

UPDATE: The fire at Mount Sion Street, Radcliffe has been put out by @ManchesterFire. A road closure will be in place overnight while the fire investigation team establishes the cause. Residents can re-open windows and doors.
