Live updates as queues build on M4, A40 and some other major Welsh routes
Traffic is heavier than normal on the M4 and A40 on Friday, September 1, ahead of the last weekend of the summer holidays.
There was a crash on the M4 which closed one lane near Newport this morning. It happened on the eastbound carriageway between junction 28 Tredegar and junction 26 Malpas. It has been cleared but there are still delays of 40 minutes in the area.
Traffic monitors are also showing delays on the A40 in Carmarthenshire with "holiday traffic" being blamed for the congestion eastbound at the St Clears Roundabout and eastbound at the Pontlesneven Roundabout. It comes as forecasters say the UK could enjoy a final blast of summer this weekend as temperatures are predicted to soar into the high 20s. The Met Office said some of the country could experience a heatwave from Saturday onwards, with the mercury reaching 28C or higher in some areas. More details of the forecast for Wales are here.
The news will be welcomed by many Britons underwhelmed by one of the wettest July months on record followed by a mixed bag of sunshine and rain in August. It is the last weekend of the summer for many as children prepare to return to school next week.
