Live updates as Prince William and Geri Halliwell come to Wales to launch project
Prince William is in Newport this afternoon to launch a five-year programme aimed at ending homelessness. The Welsh city was one of six locations that have been chosen in the UK for him to kickstart the Homewards project. He is being joined at Maindee Primary School by Spice Girl Geri Halliwell Horner, who is an advocate for the project.
Local businesses, organisations, and individuals in the city will be encouraged to join forces and develop "bespoke" action plans to tackle homelessness with up to £500,000 in funding. The future king, who was first taken to a homeless charity when a schoolboy by his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, said: "In a modern and progressive society everyone should have a safe and secure home, be treated with dignity, and given the support they need. Through Homewards I want to make this a reality and over the next five years give people across the UK hope that homelessness can be prevented when we collaborate."
William, patron of the homelessness charities Centrepoint and The Passage, started his two-day tour of the UK sites in London and was in Wales on Monday.
