Live updates as Mayhill riots sentences take place at Swansea Crown Court

Eighteen people are due to be sentenced today for their parts in a riot which scarred a community and brought shame to Swansea.

Mass violence and disorder broke out in Mayhill in May last year at what should have been a peaceful vigil for a local teenager who died suddenly - cars were trashed and torched, families attacked in their own homes, and police were pelted with bricks, stones, bottles, poles, and garden furniture.

Those involved in the rioting ranged from school children to men in their 40s. As a result of the riot seven families have now left the area or want to do so.

Police launched a major investigation to identify those involved in the disorder, and 27 people were subsequently charged. The youngest was aged just 14 when he took part in the rioting. All bar one of the defendants pleaded guilty - one pleaded not guilty was acquitted at trial.

Today the adult rioters are to be sentenced at Swansea Crown Court; the youth defendants - who cannot be named because of their ages - are being dealt with separately.
