Live updates as junior doctors start 72-hour strike in Wales
Junior doctors in Wales have started 72 hours of industrial action over a pay dispute with the Welsh Government. Around 4,000 junior doctors, ranging from first year doctors in training to experienced registrars, are on strike for the next three days, demanding that talks resume with the Welsh Government to achieve pay restoration.
The dispute is centred around the fact that junior doctors in Wales have seen a 29.6% real-terms pay cut since 2008. Last year, the Welsh Government committed to the principle of pay restoration, but offered junior doctors a pay increase of 5%, 1% lower than what was recommended by the review body for Doctors' and Dentists' Remuneration.
Of the 4,000 junior doctors in Wales, around 900 work at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where a picket line has formed on Monday morning.
