Live updates as crash shuts A465 Heads of the Valleys Road with drivers urged to avoid the area

A major Valleys road is shut following a crash. The A465 Heads of the Valleys Road in Merthyr Tydfil is closed in both directions following an incident on Saturday afternoon.

South Wales Police urged drivers to avoid the area and said the stretch will be "closed for some time". Traffic monitors said two vehicles were involved in the crash between Lower Vaynor Road (Cefn Coed) to Rocky Road (Pant).

On Twitter police said: "We are at the scene of an RTC on the A465 Merthyr Tydfil. The road is currently closed in both directions between Cefn Coed and Pant. It is expected to remain closed for some time. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible."

The closure is affecting traffic between Cefn Coed and Pant. Emergency services have been contacted for further information.
