Live updates after multi-vehicle crash shuts M4 eastbound as heavy rain and traffic volumes add to huge queues

Motorists are facing severe delays on the M4 as the weekend begins on Friday, August 18. Traffic monitors were showing delays on the motorway around Newport, Cardiff and Swansea.

One person was taken to hospital after a two-car accident had closed three lanes of the M4 eastbound between junction 33 Cardiff West and junction 32 Coryton for a time on Friday afternoon.

All lanes have re-opened around 4pm but severe delays remain and congestion is to past junction 34 Miskin in the Vale of Glamorgan to nearly at junction 35 Pencoed and northbound on the A4232. Traffic is also queuing westbound.

Weather conditions across Wales are not good as an area of low pressure brings wet and windy conditions.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind for parts of Wales as Storm Betty hits the UK. There was initially a warning in place for Friday for rain, but strong winds have now been added to this, as well as the warning being extended into Saturday, August 19. More detail here.

Traffic monitors are showing "very slow traffic" on the M4 eastbound from junction 29 at Cardiff to junction 26 at Newport, "slow traffic" eastbound at Swansea from junction 45 Ynysforgan to junction 43 Llandarcy. There is also queuing traffic in Carmarthenshire eastbound at St Clears and on the A477 eastbound from Red Roses to Llanddowror.
