LIVE: Roads and schools shut with 'severe' tram delays in icy conditions - weather and traffic updates

Temperatures have plummeted across Greater Manchester - leaving difficult conditions on the region's roads. Wintry weather has hit the area in recent days.

Heavy snow came just days after the New Year's floods, before temperatures dropped this week. Drivers and pedestrians are facing tricky conditions again this morning (January 8).

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) says there are severe delays on the Airport, Rochdale and Didsbury Metrolink lines this morning due to ice on the overhead lines. Some schools are being closed due to the weather, including Bramhall High School and Hawthorns School, in Tameside.

A yellow Met Office weather warning for ice is in force across the region until midday. Both the A555 Manchester Airport relief road and the A57 Snake Pass are closed.

Other smaller roads are also shut after a week of adverse weather, while many other roads are affected by icy surfaces. Some areas will also see patches of fog this morning, according to the Met Office.

Prior to this morning, a TfGM spokesperson said: "Following wintry showers earlier, icy conditions are likely to develop overnight. This may cause travel disruption, so please plan ahead."

A signalling issue is affecting services between Cheshire and Manchester this morninig.

A Northern spokesperson wrote on X:

"Due to a fault with the signalling system between Crewe and Manchester Airport fewer trains are able to run on some lines.

"Train services running to and from these stations will be running non stop between Styal and Heald Green.

"Customers travelling from Crewe to Manchester Airport are advised to change at Heald Green for connecting services to Manchester Airport."
