LIVE: Police descend on Greater Manchester street as 'bomb squad' called - latest updates

Emergency services have descended on a Stockport street after an 'unexploded device' was found, the Manchester Evening News understands.

Police taped off Shakespeare Drive, in Cheadle, this morning (July 8).

It's not yet known what the device at the centre of the incident is.

The Manchester Evening News understands the object has been reported as a possible Second World War-era device.

Officers do not believe there are suspicious circumstances involved in the incident, it is understood.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit is due to attend the scene.

A GMP spokesperson said: "At around 8am today (July 8, 2025) we were called to reports of the discovery of an unexploded ordinance device at Shakespeare Drive, Cheadle.

"As a precaution, a 100-metre cordon is in place while Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) attend the scene. Police advise people to avoid the immediate area while specialist officers work to make it safe. Thank you for your cooperation."
