LIVE: Northern Lights return to UK for second night running
The Northern Lights have returned to skies in the UK tonight (Monday, Fenbruary 27), for second night running.
The My Aurora Forecast app says auroral borealis activity is expected to be high over the next hour. Photos of the phemonema in Scotland tonight are being shared on social media.
And TV personality Rylan thinks he's seen them in Essex. He tweeted: "Ok I can’t believe I’m saying this but my entire life I’ve wanted to see the northern lights…. Not the best pic but this is from my ACTUAL house in ESSEX 5 mins ago. I think I’ve caught it?!?"
They have also been seen as far south as Somerset, and in Cheshire. It comes after there were rare sightings of the aurora borealis further south in the UK and Ireland on Sunday night.
The Met Office said this was due to the "strength" of a geomagnetic storm and the "strip of cloudless skies" in southern regions. It explained that a coronal hole high-speed stream arrived on Sunday combined with a "rather fast coronal mass ejection" leading to northern lights sightings across in Engalnd, Wales and Northern Ireland - and there could be the same again tonight (Monday, February 27).
Dan Stroud, operational meteorologist at the Met Office, told WalesOnline: "There is a fairly good chance of seeing the Northern Lights again tonight across parts of Wales as another coronal mass ejection arrives. Aurora is once again possible to similar latitudes, perhaps as far south as central or southern England, however you will need clear skies and a good view of the horizon."
