LIVE: Manchester trains cancelled, diverted and delayed with five routes affected - updates

Commuters are being warned to expect major disruption as railway engineering works have overrun.

The works are taking place at Edale, in the Peak District, on the line between Manchester and Sheffield this morning (February 28).

However, the issue is having an impact on other passengers further on the same line, including those travelling from Liverpool.

Five railway routes which run through Manchester are affected by the issue this morning.

A National Rail spokesperson said: "Overrunning engineering works between Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly means all lines are blocked.

"Trains running between these stations will be cancelled, revised, diverted or delayed by up to 30 minutes. Disruption is expected until 09:00."

Northern services are currently unable to run between Sheffield and New Mills Central.

National Rail says rail replacement services could be used in this area, but they are yet to be confirmed.

TransPennine Express services are diverting via Huddersifeld 'where possible'.

National Rail says the first two East Midlands Railway services of the morning from Liverpool to Norwich, via Manchester, will start at Piccadilly instead as a result of the issue.

A spokesperson said:

"The first two departures from Liverpool Lime Street this morning will start from Manchester Piccadilly.

"This is because we are waiting for the line to reopen between Sheffield and Stockport which will cause a delay to services, that will need to be minimised by starting the trains part way through the journey.

"Services from Sheffield to Stockport in both directions are likely to experience delays due to this
