LIVE: Manchester Marathon gets underway as thousands head towards new city centre finish line

One of the biggest marathon days in the UK will be getting underway today as thousands of runners take to the streets of Manchester and London in the bid for a personal best.

More than 90,000 people are expected to take part in either the Manchester Marathon or the London Marathon today (April 27) as they attempt to reach their goals and raise money for charities close to their hearts.

The Manchester Marathon will see over 36,000 people take part in a huge 26.2 mile route which will see them journey from a start line in Trafford to a new finish line in the city centre. There will also be plenty of others cheering them all on from the sidelines along the way.

Runners will be kicking off their marathons in staggered start times between 9am and 11.50am, with the first participants set to reach the finish line on Oxford Road not long after that.

With the sunny weather in tow, and the St George’s Day parade also taking place in the city centre today, it’s set to be a particularly busy day in the city centre and across public transport.

With a number of road closures in place to coincide with the number of events, travel warnings have been issued to ensure people don’t face big queues of traffic or long delays.

Following the marathon, there are also going to be lots of events taking place offering up celebratory vibes and even some freebies to medal winners.

We'll be providing you with all the updates from the Manchester Marathon in our live blog below.
