LIVE: Main road shut both ways near Stockport College with police on scene - latest updates

A main road in Stockport is cordoned off by police this afternoon.

The A6 Wellington Road South, just outside the Stockport College, is shut in both directions. It is closed from Greek Street to Longshut Lane.

Traffic is being diverted away from the area, with some buses having to take a different route. Tactical Aid Unit officers have been pictured on the scene.

The nature of the incident has not yet been confirmed. Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for details.

Local councillor Christine Carrigan said in post on Facebook: "Thanks to everyone informing me of the situation at Stockport College this morning. I'm on the scene and currently loading with Police and Officers.

"The A6 remains closed from Greek Street to Longshut Lane."

A tweet posted by Stagecoach said: "Routes 192/358/378/378/383. Diversion in both directions via Greek Street, Shaw Heath and Longshut Lane. This is due to a Police incident on A6 outside Stockport College. Sorry if this is affecting your journey with us today."

A spokesperson for Stockport College confirmed that it remains open as normal.

The spokesperson added:

"Our estates and health and safety team is working with the police to ensure the safety of students."
