LIVE: Long M56 delays from Manchester to Creamfields as pedestrian seriously injured after collision - latest updates

A pedestrian has been seriously injured after a collision with a car on a motorway slip road. Drivers heading from Manchester to the Creamfields music festival are facing long delays this afternoon (August 25) following the incident on the westbound slip road of junction 11 of the M56 in Cheshire.

Cheshire Police was called out to the scene at around 1pm, following reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a car. A spokesperson for the force added: "The pedestrian, a man aged in his 20s, has sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries."

There are tailbacks of around six miles on the westbound M56 motorway, with delays of 40 minutes approaching junction 11 for Daresbury, where the annual dance music festival is due to take place this bank holiday weekend. The slip road for junction 11 is currently closed, with drivers heading for the festival being told to continue to junction 12 at Runcorn.

A spokesperson for National Highways North West wrote on Twitter: "If you're heading [to] Creamfields please be aware, a serious collision has closed the M56 J11 westbound exit slip road. "There are long delays within the area. Approx. six miles of congestion on the M56 westbound, delays of 40 minutes above normal travel times. Please plan ahead."

A North West Motorway Police spokesperson added: "M56 junction 11 off slip on the westbound carriageway is closed due to a police incident, if going to Creamfields you will need to continue to J12." An image from the scene shows an ambulance parked up on the motorway at junction 11.
